India’s Shaili Singh won silver in the women’s long jump in World Athletics U20
Championships in Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday.
Sweden’s Maja Askag, who is the junior European champion, won gold by beating Shaili Singh by a centimeter.
Shaili Singh became one of the favourites to win a medal when she went on to top the women’s long jump qualification on Friday.
In her third attempt, she had 6.40m, a direct qualification, after crossing the 6.35m mark.
Her first jump measured 6.34m and her second measured 5.98m.
With this medal, she became the first Indian to win a medal in U-20 World Athletics championships and is the second India athlete to win a medal in big stage after her coach Anju Bobby George.
