Vijay’s Beast Movie Review

Beast-Review

Beast is an action thriller directed by Nelson Dilipkumar starring actors Vijay and Pooja Hegde in lead roles. Anirudh has done the music for the film which is bankrolled by Sun Pictures.

Beast Review:

A former RAW agent, one among the hostages in the mall captured by terrorists, must work accordingly to nullify their acts and prevent the Government from releasing their leader.

After Master, Vijay is back with Beast. When it was announced that he would join hands with Director Nelon Dilipkumar, the expectations were sky-high. Unfortunately, the film might not satisfy that expectation although, it was enjoyable.

The film begins well with a prologue on how Veera Raghavan (Vijay), a RAW agent, had to quit his job after the demise of a child. He thinks that he is the reason for the same and finds it hard to come out of it. Thus, he seeks a psychiatrist’s help.

Along with his girlfriend Preethi (Pooja Hegde), Veera Raghavan visits a mall that gets hijacked by terrorists. The latter demands the Government to release their head Umar Farook, and they are in talks with Althaf Hussain (Selvaraghavan) for the same. How Veera Raghavan saves the day and prevents the government from releasing their leader forms the crux of the story.

We have seen and heard this story multiple times in Tamil Cinema, but Nelson has tried his best to add his formula to it. Nelson, who is well-known for his dark comedy, tries handling the script in the same way he did with Doctor. However, in Doctor, the supporting actors had better screen space than what we see in Beast.

Of course, in a film that has an actor like Vijay, we know that he would be the centre of the show, but here, it feels a bit of an overdose considering the amount of space the other actors got. Perhaps, Nelson wanted to make this film only for Vijay’s hardcore fans, and if that is the case, there are a lot of whistle worthy moments.

Still, Nelson could’ve given a bit more space and a bit more powerful scenes to the villain. Anirudh’s music is a big positive along with cinematography, and editing. The fight sequences are good, but a few do look unrealistic.

In Doctor, when the writing got vague, the humour came to the rescue. Unfortunately, in Beast, a few of the jokes fall flat, and it impacts the writing, certainly not in a good way. The actors went overboard with their jokes in a few places.

Actor Vijay shoulders the film and is the biggest positive. His looks, acting, and dance. He completely steals the show and is one of the main reasons why this film could work among the mass audience.

Apart from Vijay, Selvaraghavan’s role is enjoyable, and he has done a good job. As mentioned earlier, other actors don’t get much screen space, and at the end of the day, you might not remember their contribution to the film.

Also, it’s high time directors must move away from body-shaming jokes.

On the whole, the film has a few negative points and loopholes. It could’ve been much more considering Nelson’s standards, but again, if you don’t have any expectations and are looking for some random action, Beast certainly will work for you, and if you are a Vijay fan, this film will be a treat for you.
