WBBL 07, Weekend Wrap: Brown’s hattrick, Devine’s ton and more

It was supposed to be a long weekend for WBBL07. Seven matches were scheduled to play on Saturday (23rd October) and Sunday (October 24). Unfortunately, the scheduled four matches on Saturday were abandoned due to rain. However, the other three scheduled matches were played on Sunday.

WBBL 07, Match 10: Hobart Hurricanes vs Adelaide Strikers (October 23)

Adelaide Strikers won the toss elected to field. 16 overs were played before the rain interruption. Hurricanes scored 107 runs for 5 in 16 overs. Mignon du Preez was the highest scorer with 39 off 35 which included 2 fours and 3 sixes. Darcie Brown and Amanda Wellington took two wickets each. Sarah Coyte picked one wicket. The play was stopped and later abandoned due to rain.

WBBL 07, Match 12: Sydney Thunders Vs Sydney Sixers (October 23)
The match was abandoned due to rain without a ball bowled.

WBBL 07, Match 13: Melbourne Renegades Vs Perth Scorchers (October 23)
The match was abandoned due to rain without a ball bowled.

WBBL 07, Match 14: Brisbane Heat vs Adelaide Strikers.

The 14th match of WBBL07 was played between Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers at Invermay Park, Launceston on Sunday (October 24). Adelaide Strikers won the toss and elected to field first. The play was reduced to 11 overs each due to rain.

Brisbane heat started off wonderfully and by the end of the 5th over, they were at 55 for 1. Sarah Coyte got Grace Harris at 16 of 11 in the 3rd over. However, by the end of the 6th over, Heat was reduced to 57 for 4, thanks to Darcie Brown’s Hat-trick.

Brown became the 6th player in the WBBL history to get a hat-trick. Brown dismissed Georgia Redmayne at 28 off 14, Ellie Johnston at 9 off 10, and Laura Kimmince for a duck respectively.

18-year-old Georgia Voll smashed unbeaten 31 off 17 balls and helped Brisbane Heat reach 104 for 5 in 11 overs. Brown and Coyte picked up 3 and 2 wickets respectively.

South Africans Dane van Niekerk and Laura Wolvaardt gave a magnificent start. By the end of 6 overs, Strikers were at 51 for 0. In the 8th over, Wolvaardt smashed a four and a six back-to-back. However, in the same over, Jess Jonassen dismissed the South African skipper at 24 off 22 and in-form Tahlia McGrath for a duck.

Even though the captain Jonassen missed her hat-trick, the damage was done to the Adelaide Strikers. Georgia Prestwidge got Wolvaardt and Madeline Penna in the 10th over.

18 was needed in the last over. Coyte and Amanda Wellington hit one boundary each but fell 5 runs short. Despite Darcie Brown’s hat-trick and Laura Wolvaardt’s 54  Adelaide Strikers had lost the match by 5 runs.

Jonassen and Prestwidge took two wickets each. Darcie Brown was named as a player of the match.

WBBL 07, Match 15: Melbourne Renegades Vs Sydney Sixers

Match 15 was played between Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers at Aurora Stadium in Launceston on Sunday (October 24). Melbourne Renegades won the bat flip and elected to field first.

It was a disastrous start for Sixers as Sophie Molineux dismissed Shafali Verma for a duck in the 1st over. Harmanpreet Kaur, who never bowled in the powerplays before in WBBL, picked up wickets of Ashleigh Gardner at 7 off 9 and Alyssa Healy at 5 off 10 in the 2nd and 5th over respectively.

Kaur missed her hat-trick but pushed Sydney Sixers under pressure. At the end of the powerplay, the Sixers were at 17 for 3. Nicole Bolton joined Ellyse Perry in the middle and both the experienced players kept the scoreboard ticking.

Courtney Webb, in the 18th over, broke the partnership by getting Bolton’s wicket at 38 off 41. Sydney Sixers captain Perry led from the front. However, Renegades kept the Sixers under pressure from the 1st ball. Perry got her 50 in the last over off 59 balls which included 3 fours and 1 six. Perry’s 51 and Bolton’s 38 helped Sixers reach 118 for 4 in 20 overs.

Sophie Molineux, while chasing, demoted herself down the batting order and gave her place to Evelyn Jones who usually bats up the order. Jones and Rodrigues started off beautifully. Unfortunately due to miscommunication, Rodrigues ran herself out at 14 off 15 in the 6th over.

Stella Campbell, in the 10th over, picked up Jones wicket at 38 off 30 which included 4 fours and 1 six. Kaur and Webb then built a partnership. By the end of the 15 overs, Renegades were at 97 for 2. Webb was caught and bowled in the 16th over off Radha Yadav. 17 runs were needed off 27 balls.

In the 17th over, Jess Duffin hit a four and Harmanpreet Kaur followed it up by smashing back-to-back sixes off the last two balls of the same over, finished it off in a style.

Melbourne Renegades won the match by 7 wickets with 18 balls remaining. Kaur was named player of the match for her 2/17 and unbeaten 35 off 29.

WBBL 07, Match 16: Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Thunders.

Match 16 was played between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Thunders at Aurora Stadium in Launceston on Sunday (October 24). Sydney Thunder won the toss and elected to field first.

Perth Scorchers captain Sophie Devine scored 101 off 60 balls which included 8 fours and 6 sixes. This was Devine’s 3rd WBBL hundred. Beth Mooney, on the other hand, scored 65 off 54. Both the openers shared a partnership of 173 runs before getting out in the 19th and 20th over respectively. It was the 2nd best partnership in the history of WBBL history. Scorchers scored 186 for 2 in 20 overs.

Perth Scorchers kept Sydney Thunder under pressure right from the start as Lisa Griffith got big fish Smriti Mandhana in the 3rd over. Phoebe Litchfield tried to build up a partnership with Tahlia Wilson. However, Alana King in the 10th over got Wilson and Johnson. Things went south from here for Thunder as Alana King took another two wickets, of Anika Learoyd and Corinne Hall in the 14th over.

In her four overs, she got 4 wickets for 11 runs her career-best figures. Sydney Thunder only managed to make 105 for 9 in 20 overs.

Only Deepti Sharma and Litchfield managed to pass 20 run-mark. Perth Scorchers won by 82 runs. Lisa Griffith took two wickets. Lilly Mills, Marizanne Kapp, and Heather Graham took 1 wicket each. Perth Scorchers absolutely outplayed Sydney Thunder and Sophie Devine was awarded the player of the match for her beautiful ton.
