Corona scare: Overseas players’ participation in doubt in IPL 2020 after govt cancels visitor visas

The foreign players participation in the upcoming IPL 2020 tournament is doubtful as Indian Government cancelled visas due to corona outbreak which recently was declared as pandemic.

The Ministry tweeted that “all existing visas, except diplomatic, official, UN/International Organizations, employment, project visas, stand suspended till 15th April 2020. This will come into effect from 1200 GMT on 13th March 2020 at the port of departure.”

Also, according to “Details of Visas Granted by India” manual on the  Ministry of Home Affairs, Clause 40 (xv) specifies: “Foreign nationals who are engaged in commercial sports events in India on contract (including coaches) like Indian Premier League, Indian Soccer League, etc. with remuneration. They may be granted ‘B-Sports’ Visa with multiple entry facility for 13 appropriate period. Such a foreign national shall comply with all the statutory obligations like payment of taxes, etc.”

Since there is no exception case made by the ministry, it is unlikely.

Talking about it BCCI said they need two days to decide on the same.

“Please give us two days. It’s not possible to give you concrete details at the moment,” a senior Board office bearer told PTI on Wednesday.

IPL will begin on March 29 with CSK and MI locking horns for the first match.
