WTC Final: For once, let cricket not break their heart

Sixty-nine runs. That’s all that stands between South Africa and history.

And the one holding the pen in this moment is Temba Bavuma. He’s standing there, carrying a hamstring strain, and something heavier, the ghosts of South Africa’s past heartbreaks. But he’s still there, still fighting, rewriting the ending in real time.

He’s not alone. Aiden Markram stands beside him, calmly writing his own chapter on a day where both men could be part of something unforgettable.

For a country still learning how they both can breathe the same air, a white opener and a black captain building a partnership like this in a final against Australia, means more than runs. It’s not just a partnership. It’s a path the team has never had.

Usually, when we say captain or superhero, we think of someone larger than life. Someone untouchable. Of course, you and I wouldn’t get cast as Superman, and that’s why Bavuma is the ultimate misfit. A 5’4” black captain, standing between South Africa and cricketing history.

And yet, when you look at him, he feels like one of us. That’s what makes him real.

Because who else could be doing this to Australia, and in an ICC final, no less?

This is the same Bavuma who grew up in a township where cricket felt like someone else’s sport. The same Bavuma who heard that black players could bowl to white batters, but not bat themselves.

And now he is here, leading a chase in the biggest match of South Africa’s Test history.

He is not doing it for records. This is personal. Because this is his war. His one shot to reshape what South African cricket can be, for kids who have never seen themselves in this space, for families who have only seen one kind of people holding trophies. He is not trying to be the only one but the first of many.

Temba, in his native language, means hope. And even now, every run he scores feels like a line written in hope. Every ball he defends feels like proof that the future might just look different.

But it’s not done yet.

Of course, Australia will come back harder. They always do. They are the cold climax writers, the heartbreakers. They’ve done it to India, to New Zealand, to Sri Lanka. You name it. They don’t care about fairytales. They are not here for that and will do whatever it takes to win.

But this isn’t just a fairytale. It’s a fight.

And if South Africa win this, it won’t just be the maze. It will be a torch. One that lights up the path for the next generation. One that finally burns down the word “chokers.”

Let cricket, just once, not break their hearts. Let it beat for them. Let Australia be the side characters this time.
