West Indian bowler Cecil Wright retires from cricket at 85!

Yes, you read that right. Cecil ‘Cec’ Wright will finally hang his boot at the age of 85 on September 7 where he will represent Uppermill Cricket Club for one last time against Springhead of Pennine League.

Cec played for Jamaica in his young days where he played against Gary Sobers, Wes Hall and many more West Indian greats.

In 1959, he moved to England and played Central Lancashire League for Crompton. After three years, he decided to settle down in England with his future wife Enid and son Courtney.

Cec did not stop playing the game and in 2014, he scored 80 representing Uppermill. In 2013,  He was the second-highest wicket-taker in the second division with 52 dismissals at an average of 13.4.

His son Courtney retired years before Cec could retire. Cec has had a remarkable career spanning over 70 years and is thought to have taken over 7,000 wickets.

Recently, in 2018, Cec turned up for Uppermill as the number 11 batter when the team was needing four runs to win the match against Springhead. The then 84-year-old Cec, smashed a six, to take his team home safe.

In 2013, when James, a 14-year-old became the then youngest to score a ton in a senior fixture, Cec was out there picking up six-wicket haul while bowling an unbroken spell of 12 overs.

Cec does prove to us that the age is just a number!
