World Test Championship: Why India got 60 points after WI win

The World Test Championship is underway intending to improve fans and the number of Test matches being played. After six matches, we can already see the impact on the points table.

As of now, the Indian team leads the points table with 60 points with a win from one match they played followed by New Zealand and Sri Lanka. New Zealand and Sri Lanka won a Test match and lost one each whereas, Australia and England have played three, won, lost, drew one apiece.

The question is why India was awarded 60 points whereas England and Australia had less.

Points System

According to ICC, all the teams will be three home series and three away series and the points for each match will be allocated accordingly.

Matches WinTieDrawLoss
26030200
34020130
43015100
5241280

From the table it can be seen that in a bilateral series, the points for winning a Test match is 60 whereas in the five-match series it is 24.

Now, that takes India to 60, New Zealand and Sri Lanka to 60 as they won one and lost one. Australia and England shares 32 points with a win (24) and a draw (8). West Indies is the only team so far who stays at zero.
