US: JK Rowling’s book sales sees low after “transphobic” comments

JK Rowling’s books including Harry Potter is seeing low sales despite there is a tremendous growth in the book market.

Rowling was the talk of the town after her comment on “people who menstruate”. It was offensive to the transpeople. However, this is not the first time her Tweets proved “offensive”. She “liked” a few tweets that were transphobic in 2017 as well.

She then came up with an article for her personal defense but it didn’t go well too. Her views were opposed by the Harry Potter actors including Daniel Radcliffe.

According to publishing monitor NPD BookScan, Rowling’s sales had been at an upswing since the start of the year, but suddenly slowed in the month of June, despite fiction print books sales rising by 31.4 per cent compared to May. This trend was roughly consistent across fiction titles in adult, YA and children’s sectors.

An analyst at NPD BookScan said-
“She’s certainly underperforming the rest of the market, comparatively, by two thirds.”

She also added that the growth in the market is due to the lockdown where people are turning to books to keep themselves entertained.
