Coronavirus has been declared a pandemic: What does that mean?

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization announced Coronavirus as pandemic after the disease has spread to more than 100 locations around the world.

What is pandemic?

It means a serious global outbreak of a new illness that made “sustained transition” throughout the world.

This is a loosely defined term as pandemic just define the global outbreak but not exactly the death rate due to the particular illness.

While epidemic means the outbreak of an illness within a specific area, pandemic is all about global.

WHO stated that the case wasn’t announced pandemic early as the illness didn’t spread this quick when it was found in China at first.

As of Wednesday, more than 118,000 people are affected by the illness and more than 4000 people have died.

WHO also added that this number will increase in upcoming weeks.

“We’re deeply concerned, both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction,” said Dr. Tedros. “We have never before seen a pandemic sparked by a coronavirus. This is the first pandemic caused by a coronavirus. And we have never before seen a pandemic that can be controlled at the same time.”

In 2009, WHO declared Swine flu as pandemic.
