Name change of places in TN: Tuticorin all set to be called Thoothukudi from now

For long a lot of places in the Tamil Nadu are written differently in English from their Tamil names. For example, Saithapettai is called Saidapet, Mylappoor as Mylapore, Thoothukudi as Tuticorin. The TN government has ordered to change such names of 1018 places in the state.

This comes in the background of the initiative that was taken in 2018 to have Tamil equivalents of anglicised names in the state.

Tamil development director G Vijayaraghavan said Times of india, “A group of language experts, representatives of Tamil organisations and professors, along with government administrators finalised the names at the district level and later at the state level.”

It means that Amjikarai would become Amainthakarai, Egmore to Ezhumboor, Tondaiyarpet to Thandaiyarpettai. Trichy would become Thiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli to Thirunelveli, etc.

This change came in effect since April 1 in TN, however, the rewriting part would begin after Coronavirus subsidises.
