New Zealand Pioneers: Sue Rattray

Sue Rattray was born in Canterbury and went on to represent the club since 1966. Despite good performances, she couldn’t make the cut in the New Zealand’s 1st ever World Cup squad but was selected to play in the International XI squad. She went on to score 63* against Jamaica in the World Cup.

Two years later, in 1975, she debuted in the Test team for New Zealand that toured to Australia. In the debut innings, she scored 59 runs and went on to pick two wickets as well.

She then played her 2nd World Cup in 1978 but this time for New Zealand. In one of the matches, she made 41*.

She also played the 1982 World Cup, this time, back to International XI. In the World Cup, she had her career-best figures of 4 for 33 and it came against… New Zealand. She also went on to score 68 runs against England there.

Back to New Zealand team now, in 1984, she scored a fighting 60* against hosts England in one of the ODIs, she also scored 57* in the 2nd Test of the tour.

Her best series was against the hosts India in 1985 where she had 13 wickets from 3 Tests and also scored two fifties. In ODIs, in the same tour, she had 49* and also picked up a wicket to help NZ win by 2 runs. That tour was her last appearance in international cricket, however, she went to play the game for North Shore Women until 1987.
