Dalit woman who was gangraped and was assaulted dies in hospital

A Dalit Woman who was around 19 to 20 years of age was gangraped by a few upper caste men in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras on 14th September.

The girl was survived by parents and four siblings. The father and his elder son were daily wage workers and the family’s income was based on milk from the cow they own.

On 14th September, the woman went to field along with family to cut grass to feed her cattle. While the family stayed back, she went home with large bundle of grass.

While she was returning, four men followed her, dragged her by her dupatta and gangraped her.

She was left with multiple injuries including broken spine and paralysis. She was taken to nearby hospital.

The woman then was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital Monday from the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Aligarh since her condition hadn’t improved.

According to doctors at both the hospitals, the woman had sustained severe injuries on her neck and back, was unable to breathe properly, suffering from quadriplegia (paralysis in all four limbs), and remained critical. Today, she passed away.

The four men are arrested now and are charged with murder. According to the family, they didn’t take the complaint seriously in the beginning because of the caste. Later, after the social media outrage, the police took up the case.
