MARY KOM CREATES HISTORY; WINS 6TH GOLD MEDAL IN BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Indian boxer Mary Kom scripted history on Saturday by winning the Gold medal for the record sixth time at the Women’s World Championships under the 48kg light flyweight category against Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

Mary Kom had won gold in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010 editions of the Women’s World Boxing Championship and was tied at five gold medals with Katie Taylor of Ireland. Having won the silver in 2001, she now has record seven medals to her name in the amateur boxing event.

Right from the beginning, Kom dominated her opponent who had no answers for Kom’s punches. After attacking in the early rounds, Kom was defensive and Okhota tried her best to break the defense, eventually failed. In the end, Kom won by a unanimous 5-0 decision.
