Andy Roberts: Wish we had Jasprit Bumrah in our playing days

Andy Roberts was all praise for Jasprith Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah was giving an interview alongside Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane after the first Test match at Antigua. He was tapped on his shoulders by Andy Roberts and Curtley Ambrose.

The West Indian legends congratulated Bumrah for his bowling performance in the second innings. Bumrah bowled eighth overs and ended up with 5 wickets for 7 runs.

Andy Roberts was all praise for Bumrah. He went on to say that he wished Bumrah played with him in his era. “At times, he rekindles memories of our prime. The pace, aggression, the hostility, the craft. The way he outclasses the batsmen, the way he out-thinks them. He could have been one of us, he’s so complete a bowler that he could have played in any era”, he said in an interview with The Indian Express.

In the first innings, Bumrah took only one wicket, while Ishant Sharma took a five-wicket haul. He was quick to adapt to the conditions in West Indies and showed a masterclass of fast bowling in the second innings.

Ambrose said that adapting to conditions has been Bumrah’s key to success. “He’s good at varying his lengths, depending on the surfaces and batsmen. I saw that in the World Cup, how he adjusted his lengths according to the conditions and batsmen. That makes life difficult for batsmen”, he said to The Indian Express.

“(In this regard), he reminds me a bit of Courtney (Walsh) a bit. He was wonderful in sizing up the length and bowling accordingly”, Ambrose said.

Jasprit Bumrah is the fastest Indian fast bowler to take 50 wickets. Bumrah has also taken five-wicket hauls in South Africa, England, Australia and West Indies in his first tour.

The Indian captain also has stressed on managing the premier fast bowler’s workload. It is a no-brainer that Jasprit Bumrah is probably the “Most Valuable Player” in Indian Cricket right now alongside Virat Kohli.
