TN plans ordinance for 10% reservation for Govt. school students in NEET

Reports are coming in that the Tamil Nadu government has planned to pass an ordinance for 10 per cent quota for government school students in NEET.

According to a report by Times of India, the state government has planned the ordinance to bring in a horizontal reservation of 10 per cent in NEET for students who studied in a government school.

The proposal comes after a significant fall in the number of government school students who join medical courses in the state. This decision has been reported to be made on the basis of recommendations by Justice P Kalaiyarasan led committee.

Since the implementation of NEET, the number of students who joined medical courses from government schools in the state is just 14. In 2016, 34 students had joined medicine from government schools.

Another significant point is that almost 66 per cent of candidates who got selected last year had done so in their second attempt after not being able to get through in 2018.

One of the criteria for this reservation is that the student should have studied from class VI to XII in a government school. G R Viswanath, general secretary of Doctor’s association for general quality said TOI that it is good that government is trying to bring in a quota for government school students, they have to focus on improving the standards of education now to make sure that the students are able to crack these competitive exams.

It is also to be noted that recently a plea was filed in court to implement the OBC reservation in All India quota seats, which is not in practice since the implementation of NEET.
