BCCI confirms that VIVO will not sponsor IPL2020

IPL suspended until further notice due to Corona outbreak

On Thursday, BCCI put out a statement which was lesser than the number of characters in a tweet saying that VIVO will not sponsor the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League.

The statement read, “The BCCI and Vivo Mobile India Pvt Ltd have decided to suspend their partnership for Indian Premier League in 2020.” No other details were provided.

This might be due to the social media outrage against BCCI for going ahead with VIVO, a Chinese sponsor, after India-China border issue.

VIVO, in 2015, became the title sponsors for IPL. The contract was for two years and VIVO then went on to sign five-year contract which would run till 2022.

According to India Today, VIVO would eventually return as the title sponsors 2022 and 2023.

BCCI will be looking forward for a new sponsor. However, VIVO’s exit will not affect the franchises.

This year’s IPL is all set to begin on September 19 and would run till November 10. The women’s T20 challenge will be taking place from November 1 to November 10.

Due to increasing COVID19 cases, the tournament will be taking place in the UAE.
