SC lifts the ban on Sreesanth!

The Supreme Court has lifted the life ban on the Indian pacer Sreesanth imposed by BCCI and has asked the latter to look into the quantum of punishment within three months from today.

The cricketer was slapped with a life ban after his involvement in the spot-fixing during the 2013 IPL season.

In 2015, he was acquitted by a trial court.

In August 2017, a single-judge bench of the Kerala High Court had lifted the life ban imposed on Sreesanth by BCCI.

Within two months, a division bench of the high court restored the ban allowing appeal filed by the BCCI against the single-judge bench’s order.

On 27 February, the hearing of the case was held in the Supreme Court and Sreesanth claimed that the life ban is completely unfair.

According to a PTI report, his counsel told a bench of justices that there was ‘no clear proof’ of match-fixing, and Sreesanth suffered a lot in the past five-six years.

Senior Advocate, Salman Khurshid, appearing for Sreesanth, told the bench, “In the context of facts and manner in which these things have happened, this court should consider that it (life ban on Sreesanth by BCCI) is unfair. He has suffered for the last five-six years. People want him to play cricket. He was extremely loyal to BCCI.”

He further added, “The team (Rajasthan Royals) and its owners were banned for two years only. It is completely unfair that this (life ban) has happened with him (Sreesanth).”

In the report, the cricketer added that he knows his international career is virtually over and all he wants is to play for domestic cricket for a few years.
