Breaking: Mithali Raj announces retirement from T20Is

Former Indian T20I captain Mithali Raj has announced her retirement from the T20Is.

Mithali led India in 32 T20Is including the three Women’s WT20 World Cups in 2012 (Sri Lanka), 2014 (Bangladesh) and 2016 (India). She was also the captain in India Women’s first-ever T20I played in Derby back in 2006. Mithali overall has played 89 T20I matches for India and has 2372 runs at an average of 37.52 to her name.

“I wish to retire from T20Is to focus my energies on readying myself for the 2021 One Day World Cup. It remains my dream to win a World Cup for my country,” she said.

Earlier in 2018 World Cup, Mithali Raj was not selected in a few matches which led to a rift between the then coach Ramesh Powar and her.

Keeping the T20I World Cup in mind, this is possibly a better decision from the veteran to move forward.

India will take on South Africa in a T20I series later this month.
