Bigil: An engaging entertainer | Review

Before getting into what I felt about the movie, here is a pro-tip. Don’t go for FDFS if you want to write about the movie because you cannot hear a single word. Simply Put: It was Verithanam from the fans.

You cannot blame them as well. Watching Vijay and Nayanthara on the screens is special and what’s even more special is that Atlee-Vijay combo. They have better chemistry and things work out well too.

So yes, coming back to the movie, from the trailer, most of us would have predicted the storyline and it’s almost the same but you will be pushed to the edge of the seat during the second half, thanks to the whole movie crew, the cinematography, writing, screenplay, background score and of course, the actors. Everything has fallen in the right place.

In the first half, the movie goes fun with some beautiful romantic sequence between Nayanthara and Vijay, and I certainly did love it despite the fact that it was a bit stretchy.

Vijay as Royappan is one of the best-written characters in an Atlee Movie. Vijay has done well to carry the role for sure. In fact, he carries the movie on his shoulders although the movie has a lot of interesting characters.

The comic timing of Michael is something I enjoyed. It was fun to see Vijay like this, something we missed (or should I say I missed?) in his last few movies.

Nayanthara once again has done her role neat and well. So is Kathir, Vivek and Yogi Babu.

Though the movie has a male saviour, the calculated attempt on women empowerment worked out. While the girls’ characters lack depth, they do have a mighty role to play in the movie and does get loud cheers in a few scenes.

Oh yes, the movie has Jackie Shroff too. He is the antagonist. Unfortunately, in a movie like this, you cannot expect the antagonist to have a great role. Also, it’s a predicted role. I did expect more from him, but again, it’s hard.

Atlee’s speciality is connecting with the audience. There are a lot of scenes that work in this way in Bigil too. The whole of the movie keeps us engaging.

The movie belongs to Vijay and Vijay alone. The most interesting thing is that there were a few scenes where Vijay takes the back seat and allows the girls to get the loudest cheers. On the whole, Bigil is a beautiful sports drama that keeps you engaging throughout the movie despite the fact that you already know the plot.
