Aakash Chopra answers: What happens to MS Dhoni if there is no IPL 2020?

Former Indian captain MS Dhoni is away from international cricket for a long time now. Dhoni played his last game in 2019 World Cup semi-final which India lost to New Zealand.

After the World Cup, Dhoni went to self-imposed sabbatical. While there were rumours about his retirement, Dhoni hasn’t opened his mouth yet on anything.

However, in an interview, Ravi Shastri confirmed that Dhoni would be a consideration for the upcoming T20 World Cup if he has a good run in the IPL season.

Considering the fact that the IPL might be cancelled this year due to corona outbreak, the million-dollar question is what would happen to the legendary cricketer.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra was asked about the same by a fan and he replied that Dhoni would still be considered and his IPL form wasn’t going to be a “critical factor” for his selection.

“For a player like Dhoni, IPL was never going to be a yardstick. If he had scored runs in the IPL, experts would have been like ‘select Dhoni’, ‘do this and do that’. MS Dhoni knows what he is doing, whether he wants to come back or not,” Chopra said in a YouTube video while responding to a query by a fan who asked- ‘what about MS Dhoni’s future if IPL 2020 gets cancelled?’

“IPL, I don’t think was a critical factor. If he wants to come back, he will make himself available, if the selectors decide to pick him, he will be picked automatically because you won’t get experience in supermarkets.
“Dhoni is a hugely experienced player. If India needs MS Dhoni, then with or without IPL, he will come back.”

MS Dhoni was practising in Chennai ahead of the IPL season but since the tournament has been postponed, the CSK captain has bid a small adieu to his second home and is Ranchi currently.
