COVID19: Punjab becomes 2nd state to extend Coronavirus lockdown

On Friday, Punjab became the second state after Odisha to extend the lockdown till May 1.

The state has more than 130 positive cases reported and is likely to increase in the upcoming weeks.

Areas in Delhi and Mumbai have emerged as hotspots and many states have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend the nationwide lockdown beyond its expiry date of Tuesday.

Addressing an online news briefing, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said that predictions by health experts about the spread of the pandemic are “horrendous and frightening”.

He also said that the people are started to get affected because of the secondary transmission which is a dangerous sign.

Citing the projections about the spread of the pandemic in the coming weeks, the chief minister said the restrictions were essential so the state’s medical infrastructure was not overburdened.

“There was general consensus in the medical community that the lockdown curbs would only delay the spread of the disease,” he said, adding that he hoped there was a cure soon.

It is to be noted that the Punjab Government was the first to impose a statewide lockdown on March 23, a day before the Prime Minister announced the 21-day national lockdown.
