Murdered teen paid moving tribute by his soccer teammates in Mexico

Alexander Martinez, a -16-year-old from Mexico who was murdered this week, was paid a moving tribute by his soccer teammates. They mobbed his coffin, took it to the place where he plays soccer and artificially created a goal-scoring scenario of his coffin as a tribute for one last time.

The incident happened in Oaxaca, a southern Mexican state, where his killing was allegedly blamed on the police department. Martinez was buried in his native village Vicente Camalote on Thursday.

Being someone who had dual citizenship both in the US and Mexico, the reason for Martinez’s death was not transparent. According to local reports, Martinez was shot dead by Mexican police for a mistaken identity when he went to buy soda on Thursday.

His death was one of the many other police killings in Mexico where protests are happening against police brutality. They have been accused of torturing, abducting and even killing people on the streets.

Martinez’s funeral was attended by close to 300 people where a dozen of his soccer teammates from a team that is affiliated with C.F. Monterrey mobbed the coffin and paid a moving tribute to make him score a goal for one last time. The video has been trending on social media.

Oaxaca State Governor Alejandro Murat took it to twitter to say, “In Oaxaca, the law will apply, without hesitation, for those responsible for Alexander’s case,” he said on Twitter.
