Real Madrid won their first La Liga title since 2017 with a game to spare as they went past Villarreal at an empty Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.
The two goals came from their leading scorer Karim Benzema. After scoring between the legs of Asenjo, Benzema converted a retaken penalty at the 77th minute to put Real Madrid front.
Their 10th consecutive win was not without controversy. Benzema had put the ball in the net moments earlier after an audacious pass from the spot kick by original penalty taker Sergio Ramos but it had to be re-taken due to encroachment in the area.
Villarreal pulled a goal during the final minutes but it didn’t matter as Real Madrid will head into the final day of the season with an unassailable seven-point lead over second-placed FC Barcelona.
Barcelona had a poor outing at home once again as they went down to Osasuna as Torres scored during the final seconds of the match when the team was 1-1.

Coming back to the Real Madrid, Zidane is a serial winner and this is his 11th title as the Real Madrid boss in just over four years. He was there when the team won La Liga last time and he did promise that winning the title is his goal when he signed up for the second time.
