Based on the new ordinance passed by Tamil Nadu under Gaming Act, people from Tamil Nadu will not be able to participate in Dream11 cash contests anymore, however, they can continue to play in free practice contests.
According to Dream11, they are still working on the clarification regarding the same and this ban might be temporary.
The statement in the APP says-
“As part of an amendment passed by the state of Tamil Nadu, certain changes have been made to the state’s Gaming Act.
We are currently clarifying the exact impact of the changes, but for now, all residents of Tamil Nadu will not be able to join pay-to-play contests on Dream11.
Here’s a guide to help you understand what’s changed, and what you can do in this situation.
What are these changes?
From 3 PM on 6th Feb, 2021, you will not be allowed to join pay-to-play contests or add cash to your Dream11 account. You can, however, continue participating in practice contests or free private contests.”
The new bull states that anyone indulging in online gambling would be imposed a fine of Rs 5000 fine and 6 months jail term and Rs 10000 fine and two years prison for those hosting the gambling.
The Statement of Objects and Reasons for the Bill that has been passed said: “Playing games like Rummy, Poker etc., using computers or mobile phones for money or other stakes which are addictive in nature had developed manifold in the recent times. As a result, innocent people got cheated and incidents of suicide were reported.
In order to prevent such incidents of suicide and protect innocent people from the evils of online gaming, it was decided to ban wagering or betting in cyber space by suitably amending the relevant enactments.”
Accordingly, an ordinance was promulgated on November 20, 2020 and the present Bill seeks to replace the ordinance with certain modifications.
