We Are One: A Global Film Festival initiative brings you some of the exotic films to watch from the comfort of your home. Staying home in this lockdown has made to find a way for the films from all around the world to reach our finger tips through Youtube. This online film festival takes place from May 29th to 7th June, 2020.
Day 1 kicks off with short films from Annecy film festival. Here are the 3 extraordinary short films from Dreamwork productions:
Bird Karma (2018) is an intriguing animation short film that convey the story only visually with no dialogues. Under a grey gloomy sky, in the middle of a lake, there is a crane that eats off fishes to satisfy its hunger. Nothing goes wrong until the bird decides to become greedy. It fixes its eye on a magical fish which seems to be unaware of the danger that surrounds it. It tries to spread its happiness even at the vicinity of its predator. The fish’s world, under the water, is so colourful on the other hand. Though the crane needn’t hoard its food as the nature has already laid the solutions for the bird to find it when it needs it, it is not contended. The usual, constant food doesn’t entertain the crane. When the bird’s desire takes over itself, it ends on a sad note. The predator becomes the prey. Bird Karma is a wonderfully created animation short. The classical music in the background score sets a pensive mood for it to convey its theme, the morality.
Bilby (2018) is a beautiful animation short from Dreamworks productions which dwells on an adventurous day of 2 delicate creatures in the outback on a deserted dry land. Bilby, a kind of rabbit, with a pair of wide ears, lives in the wild to fend for himself. It lives among various types of creatures. Reptiles with sharp-edged tentacles and venomous teeth, wild foxes with larger canine come after this little bilby while it takes detour alone to collect the food it needs to survive. Bilby comes across a cute, little, delicate albatross chick while escaping from its predators. The chick is unable to protect itself on its own from the danger that surrounds it. Bilby, while being protective of its own life and survival, it takes a giant leap to do more than just lending an helping hand to this little creature. The stunning animation work and the mesmerizing background score works well in the film. Bilby and the chick, the two delicate creatures, live in a world that belongs to ruthless creature. They find a friend in themselves while pushing the boundaries of the things they thought they couldn’t pull off.
Marooned (2019) is a stunning animation short film named after the 1969 sci-fi hollywood film. Mankind has done wonders on this earth. Since the day the mankind realized its potential, great things take their form to its own surprise. What if even the robots, another man-made work of wonder, are surprised by the mankind and love to be in their shoes. Marooned is themed after such thought. On the lunar outpost, outside the planet a earth, a robot is seen abandoned. It is in the process of building its own spacecraft to fly out of this deserted place. It finds a little assisting robot among the debris of machines. Both of them work hand in hand to build a spacecraft that could take them to their dreamland, planet earth. It is pretentious to see a couple of robots desire to go somewhere and work day and night towards their dream. It’s mankind’s way of humanizing everything those avail to ourselves. Making a robot dream is due to such habit. It is undeniably an enjoyable experience to empathize with the robots. Only films can make us achieve such empathy, even towards a machine. I loved how the two robots run out of their lab everyday to catch the glimpse of planet earth from the moon just we catch the moon through the windows from our homes. Marooned is a great watch for its brilliant animated work with impressive background score.
