Supreme court has issued a notice to the centre to answer the 60 pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the controversial new citizenship law. The court also declined to stay implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
The three-judge top court bench headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, spoke to the media, said: “we will have to see whether the Act has to be stayed”
Petitions challenging the citizenship law claim it violates the basic structure of the Constitution and that religion cannot become the basis for determining citizenship.
