Bengaluru residents hear a thunderous sound - Officials investigating the reason

Residents in the eastern side of Bengaluru heard a loud noise in their area. The ‘BOOM’ sound, as the residents describe it, was heard in Whitefield, Vivek Nagar, Ramamurthy Nagar, Hosur Road, HAL, Old Madras Road, Ulsoor, Kundanahalli, Kammanahalli, CV Raman Nagar, and HSR Layout.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon around 1.30 pm. Many residents ook it to social media to explain their experience as ‘thunderous noise’, ‘boom’, while a few said that they felt vibrations in their windows for as long as five seconds.

The News Minute reported that Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao has said that no damage has occurred anywhere in the city and no calls were made to 100. “We have asked the Air Force Control Room to check if this was a flight,” he said. Any confirmation from the Air Force is yet to come.

It has been reported that it was not an earthquake as confirmed by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre. Srinivas Reddy, Director of KSNDMC, told TNM that an earthquake would not be restricted to one area and would be widespread. “We have checked our sensors, and there is no earthquake activity recorded today,” he said.

Meanwhile, it has been speculated that the sound could be a ‘sonic beam’ from a fighter jet flying over the city. A sonic boom is the effect of fast movement of aircraft – the booming sound is generated when an aircraft flies faster than the speed of sound.

A similar ‘sonic boom’ was heard in Bengaluru back in 2005. It is to be noted that a few had pointed out that the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) could be conducting routine flight tests of light combat aircraft (LCA).
