COVID19 & Floods: Assam’s situation needs attention

Assam is going through worse hit with floods taking over and destroying the normal lives. Also, the rate of COVID19 pandemic is increasing day by day.

The number of death due to the floods have already crossed 60 with more than 36 Lakhs people affected in 26 different districts.

A release said that among the worst-hits districts is Barpeta where over 5.50 lakh people are affected. Dhubri, Morigaon and South Salmara districts with 4.11 lakh, 4.08 lakh, and 2.25 lakh people affected, respectively, are also among the worst-hit by the deluge.

Talking about the condition, “In two waves of floods over almost two months, 66 people have met a watery grave while 26 more were buried alive in landslips induced by heavy rainfall. But the situation has improved slightly with the number of displaced people decreasing overnight from 44,108 to 36,320 across 249 relief camps in 19 districts,” an ASDMA(State Disaster Management Authority) spokesperson said.

Adding more, the waters of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have entered the Kaziranga National Park, forcing tigers and other animals to flee to human habitats and highlands for survival.

This is not the first time Assam is hit by worst floods. They are facing the same every single year and are forced to live with it. Every year the things have only gotten worse. The Government really should think about long-term solution. While we cannot entirely stop floods, we can at least take preventive measures.

Now, COVID19 cases are also increasing rapidly. The place has more than 6500 active cases.

The worst part is that there isn’t enough coverage for the issue. They deserve at least this, don’t they?
