Had no option, had to back Samad for last over: David Warner

SRH pulled off a win against CSK in their last match. Everything was going as per SRH’s plan in the game until Bhuvaneshwar Kumar injured himself. This means the team was a bowler short in the death over. Khaleel, who was supposed to bowl the final over, came early to finish off the 19th. This means the team had to go with either Samad or Sharma in the final over.

With 28 needed from 6 deliveries and with MS Dhoni batting, it was a gamble. However, the youngster pulled it off as SRH won the game.

“I backed him (Samad) – I had no option. We tried to kill the game in the 19th over. Could have given it to Abhishek, but Samad with his height had to bowl the last one,” David Warner said in the post-match presentation ceremony after SRH registered their 2nd successive win in IPL 2020.

Talking about team’s performance, he said that they have done well with the bat compared the previous game.

“This was a little better as compared to the last one. It was quite challenging, it’s good to see swing upfront. It’s my message to the youngsters, to go out there and score some runs.

He also appreciated the youngsters who did well in the middle and death overs to take the team to a decent total.

“These guys assessed the conditions and played well, so really really proud of them. These guys really work hard, they execute their yorkers, they execute their slower ones. These are the rewards we are getting, and hopefully, we get the momentum going forward,” Warner added.
