In a what you can call an expected news, Rajasthan Royals management sacks their captain Ajinkya Rahane to appoint Steve Smith as their captain for the rest of the season.
Rahane, who is going through a poor form didn’t do well as a captain too. Rajasthan Royals are in a verge of getting virtually eliminated from the tournament after losing six out of their eight matches.
Now, this might act as a blessing in disguise as the team can drop Rahane for his poor form.
This also marks Steve Smith’s return to captaincy in a major tournament after serving the ban. Just a reminder that he is not allowed to captain only Australia for two years.
Zubin Bharucha, Head of Cricket for RR said, “Ajinkya is and will always be a true Royal. He led the team to the play offs in 2018 in a very challenging scenario and that will go down as one of the great comebacks of the IPL. He remains a key part of our side and leadership team and will extend support wherever required to Steve.”
“Steve is one of the most innovative and successful captains in the world, in all formats of the game. We are confident he can lead the Royals to success,” added Bharucha.
Rajasthan will take on Mumbai today in a virtual do or die encounter.
