To avoid plastic pollution, Sikkim introduces bamboo water bottles for tourists

Sikkim is one of the largest tourist-attractive places in India and the Government has come forward to ban the plastic bottles to avoid pollution.

Lachen, arguably the first town to completely ban packaged drinking water bottles, is introducing bamboo bottles as an alternative.

The move came after the number of plastic bottles which are left behind by the tourist during their travel to the town.

Sikkim has been taking multiple steps to ban the plastics. In 1998, they banned the usage of plastic bottles in the city and in 2016, the packaged drinking water in government offices as well as at all government events was banned.
The authorities do make random check-ups in the vehicles of the tourists to avoid plastic littering.
