Scotland becomes 1st country to make sanitary pad, tampons free

Scotland recently became the first country to make sanitary products free. The country addressed the period poverty and has passed a bill.

The Parliament voted unanimously in favor of the Period Products bill, months after lawmakers had initially showed their support.

“The campaign has been backed by a wide coalition, including trades unions, women’s organisations and charities,” Monica Lennon, the lawmaker who introduced the bill last year, said ahead of the vote. “Scotland will not be the last country to make period poverty history.”
After the vote, Lennon said the decision was “a signal to the world that free universal access to period products can be achieved.”

With this bill, the sanitary products will be available for free in public buildings like schools and universities and it is upto the local authorities to ensure that the products are free of charge.
