England pioneers: Mary Pilling

Mary Pilling was born on December 14, 1938, in Cheshire, England. Pilling went on to play for Kent Women in 1962 and soon made it to the Test team in 1963. 

She went on to pick three wickets in the first Test match against Australia. Her first wicket was the then Australian captain Mary Allitt. She then went on to play a few more Tests and her best performance was 4 for 53 which came against New Zealand in 1976. 

 Pilling made her ODI debut in the 1973 World Cup which England went on to win. She had the best bowling average in that World Cup with 10.22. She had 9 wickets with an economy rate of 1.55. 

She then went on to captain the next World Cup, 1978, which happened five years later. She ended her career with 20 innings and 18 wickets in Test matches and 9 innings, 10 wickets in the ODIs.

She had an economy rate of 1.84 which is the best among the England women who have bowled in at least five innings. She was also a scorer for a few matches before making her debut.
