An ode to Pradeep Kumar

Some voices stay with you. Some give you company and then there is Pradeep Kumar. Does he get all the good songs or he just makes everything sound good? How can he keep doing that to us? He doesn’t have to do much though. I mean, he doesn’t even try that hard. There are not many voices that can make you feel full. Pradeep Kumar does that with ease. He takes us through days, makes us feel things that we didn’t know existed, keeps us calm, talks to us like a good companion, shows why songs are just too powerful.

When he goes, ‘ஓ ரிங்காரமே’, he sweeps our heart with him. He plays lost and found with us through ‘Life of Ram’. Every single line and scene blend perfectly. It doesn’t stop with Ram. Through his voice, one can easily get a glimpse of what the characters are going through. Kaala. Kabali and there is more.

He grows on us with ‘என்ன நான் செய்வேன்’ while ‘ஆகாயம் தீப்பிடிச்சா நிலா தூங்குமா’, tries to heal the heart that was kidnapped by ‘நீ கவிதைகளா’ and killed by ‘கண்ணம்மா’ and ‘மாயநதி’. One too many moods, one too many songs and just one Pradeep Kumar.

It’s been years since Santhosh Narayanan took over our playlists. He had given us so much that one can pull off the entire binder just to take about him and his songs. Pradeep Kumar’s voice is like the best friend Santhosh Narayanan’s music could get. When they join hands, they take us to a different world, a world where everything looks just good and brings us back to the Earth with a different mood altogether.

I’m not sure how many times I would’ve cried hearing Pradeep Kumar sing. He is something special and just too good to be true. He already has given us hits more than any other singer in the recent past. Yes, he did and most of us don’t even have an idea. He has been traveling with us all this long and the journey has just begun. He is waiting out there just to make us all fall in love once again.
