Mumbai: Doctor booked for ‘sexual assault’ on COVID-19 patient

A doctor from Wockhardt hospital, Mumbai was arrested on May 1, 2020, for allegedly sexually assaulting a male Coronavirus patient admitted in the same hospital.

However, the accused is quarantined and not arrested due to the fear that he might have been infected with the virus.

He is currently confined in his apartment block in Thane under the monitoring of Police.

The 34-year-old had joined the hospital on April 30, the same day the patient was admitted to the hospital.

The hospital said that the doctor has been removed the accused from his duties. The official statement read ,”

Police said that the accused is an MD, who studied in Navi Mumbai Medical College. Cases are registered under IPC 377(unnatural offences), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infectious disease) and 270 ( malignant act likely to spread infection of disease that endangers life) based on the complaint from the Hospital authority.

According to the complaint, the accused had entered the ICU ward of the patient and had made physical advances towards the patient, who resisted and raised alarms.

As per Indian Express reports, the police is yet to take an official statement from both the patient and the accused. It was also reported that the hospital had to recruit young doctors after the hospital decided to keep sexagenarians and people with co-morbidities at home as a precautionary measure.
