It was an historic moment in Australia as the team lifted their first Men’s T20 World Cup title.
New Zealand began their attack well, led by their captain Kane Williamson. After 28-run opening partnership, Williamson joined Guptill and was too good right from ball one. He took on Starc and then continued his attack, ended with 85 runs from just 48 deliveries. With 10 fours and three sixes, he helped the team to reach 172 runs from their 20 overs.
Josh Hazlewood was the best bowler for Australia with 3 for 18.
Chasing 173, Australia began well with David Warner taking on the pacers. While Aaron Finch got out early, he had good support from Mitchell Marsh. Warner ended with 53 from just 38 deliveries. Marsh continued to take on bowlers after Warner’s dismissal and he stood there until the end. Marsh ended up with unbeaten 77 and took the team home in the end.
Trent Boult was the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand with 2 for 18. Other than that, none of the bowlers were economical.
Aaron Finch now becomes the fifth Australian captain to lift the T20 World Cup.
