Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case: SC orders release of Perarivalan

The Supreme Court has ordered the release of AG Perarivalan on Wednesday. Perarivalan alias Arivu spent 31 years in jail and was 19-year-old when he was arrested on June 11, 1991.

He was accused of buying the two 9-volt batteries from Sivarasan. According to the report, the batteries were used in the bomb that killed Rajiv Gandhi.

Earlier in 1998, TADA Court had ordered a death sentence for Perarivalan.

In 1999- the apex court upheld his sentence.

2014- The court thenpw ordered lifetime imprisonment

March 2022- He was granted bail on grounds of mercy petition as he had spent 31 years in jail.

May 2022- SC orders the release of Perarivalan
