COVID19 in Delhi: Liquor prices up 70% from today

On Tuesday, Delhi announced that there will be 70% increase in the liquor with the Delhi government imposing a “special corona fee” on alcohol.

Government issued a late night notification, “70 per cent of the maximum retail price on all categories of liquor sold through retail licensees”.

On Monday, the wine shops run by the Government were opened for the first time since the lockdown. Despite the announcements regarding social distancing, there were hundreds of people gathering before the shop, violating the rules. In a lot of places, lathi charge was needed.

In order to avoid such situations, Government has come up with 70% special corona fee.

The government amended the Delhi Excise Act, 2009, for the special fees. A spokesperson said the new rates will start Tuesday.

Delhi earns around Rs 500 crore per month from the sale of liquor.
